Here at Meetini, we’re changing the way we package our spirits and replacing glass bottles with our most sustainable containers yet: compostable paper water bottles produced by the innovative Paper Water Bottle company, which offers products that are 98% landfill biodegradable.
In adopting paper bottles for our range of organic and ethically sourced spirits, we join industry giants like Absolut, Carlsberg and Johnnie Walker, which have all recently begun integrating paper containers into their product ranges. Paper Water Bottle company products are made of a blend of bamboo and sugar cane pulp, which makes them as sturdy as they are sustainable.
Why paper bottles? As far as sustainable containers go, single-use plastic is – as you can well imagine – a huge no-no. In the UK, for example, packaging accounts for 70% of all plastic waste, while globally, the production and disposal of plastic accounts for roughly 1.8 billion tonnes of carbon emissions each year, according to WRAP.
But while sustainability advocates often tout glass containers as a greener alternative, the truth is that the UK alone sends nearly 200,000 tonnes of glass to landfills each year, according to the UK Green Building Council – which isn’t all that surprising, given that only 71% of container glass is recyclable. Of the glass that is recyclable, much of it still ends up in landfills; in fact, the UK has a glass recycling rate of around 50%, compared to countries like Finland and Switzerland, which boast rates above 90%.
Rather than waiting around for recycling practices to improve, many leaders in innovation are simply looking for new ways to package their products. Paper Water Bottle, for instance, makes their containers almost entirely made from paper pulp; the cap liner is the only part of the bottle that isn’t biodegradable, although the brand plans to further innovate and replace the caps in the future, with a goal of 100% backyard compostability on the horizon.
We hope that by taking advantage of the sustainable innovations that companies like Paper Water Bottle are creating, we can empower consumers to make choices that protect the Earth without sacrificing convenience or quality.
